Milk: Deeply Moving, Difficult, and Worthwhile

Milk: Deeply Moving, Difficult, and Worthwhile "I know that you cannot live on hope alone, but without it, life is not worth living." — Harvey Milk The story of gay rights activist and politician Harvey Milk had a huge impact on me a few years ago when I first watched the Oscar-winning documentary about him, The Times of Harvey Milk. His is truly a stranger-than-fiction tale and is so full of inspiration, absurdity, and absolute heartache that it's somewhat surprising it has taken this long to create a feature-length dramatization of his life and death.

Pop Reports: Ida Maria at the Scala My girl FabUK got to see Ida Maria last night... Last night I braved the awful London weather to check out Norwegian's current hottest export at the Scala in King's Cross. If you don't recognise the name then you'll definitely remember the Summer anthem "I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked".

Four Christmases: A (Very) Light Dash of Holiday Fun

Four Christmases: A (Very) Light Dash of Holiday Fun It's most likely that Four Christmases wouldn't be nearly so funny or endearing (though that may be slightly too strong a word for it) if it didn't take place around the holidays. Just watching these family members be mean to each other would probably be merely sad if it weren't juxtaposed with this holiday that is supposed to be at least partially about family togetherness. The premise of the film is gimmicky for sure (four Christmases in one day?), but what happens during those four Christmases is actually a lot of fun to watch.

Pop A DVD In: Mamma Mia! It's starting to get really cold now, so thank goodness for the DVD release of Mamma Mia! this week. One of the massive box office hits of the summer, the film based on the stage musical will bring some welcome sunshine and laughter into your living room. Meryl Streep is on wonderful all-singing all-dancing form as Donna, a single mum with a run-down hotel on an idyllic Greek island.

Quantum of Solace: Just an Action Flick Where Casino Royale was bright, shiny and breathtaking, Quantum of Solace is cold, steely, and flat. Don't get me wrong — the explosions, gun play, and dry quips are all present and accounted for. But where there might've been a compelling narrative there's just a string of action sequences and chase scenes, interrupted by the occasional heart-to- cold, mistrusting spy heart.

Pop Preview: Easy Virtue Jessica Biel steals the show as glamourous and intelligent Larita in Easy Virtue, a 1920s romantic comedy based on Noel Coward's play. After a whirlwind romance in America, Larita has married young earnest John (Ben Barnes), and when the couple arrive at the Whittakers' stately country house it's time for Larita to face her in-laws. Mrs Whittaker (Kristin Scott Thomas) is certainly not impressed to have an American for a daughter-in-law, while a withdrawn Mr Whittaker (Colin Firth) does his best to keep out of the way.
